  • Triple P

What’s Triple P? If you live in North Carolina, Triple P Positive Parenting Program is a free online program designed to help parents develop skills, strategies, and confidence to handle any parenting situation that may arise.

From the occasional tantrum to ongoing challenges, Triple P guides parents through a number of helpful exercises—all so you can better connect with your child, navigate growing pains, and set your child up for a lifetime of success.

The Triple P Principles

Triple P is an evidence-based parenting and family support system for children between the ages of 0 and 16. It’s designed to help increase your confidence and competence in raising children, improve your relationships with your child, and provide easy access to helpful information.

As a program, Triple P is based on five core principles, all centered on the concept of positive parenting:

  • Ensuring a safe, supervised, and engaging environment: The young years of a child’s life are their most formative—and having a safe, interesting, and secure environment provides young children with opportunities to learn, explore, discover, and develop their skills.
  • Creating a positive learning environment that helps your child learn to solve problems: Learning doesn’t just happen in school environments. To help children learn, parents must be present, available, and attentive. One of the best ways for parents to help a child learn and thrive is by encouraging them to try new things and providing positive affirmation.
  • Using consistent, predictable, and assertive discipline to help your child learn to accept responsibility for their behavior and become aware of the needs of others: Managing misbehavior in a supportive and constructive way paves the path for a child to become responsible, self-aware, and disciplined. When a parent reacts consistently and predictably to misbehavior—and never yells, threats, or engages with physical violence—a child feels safe and supported.
  • Having realistic expectations, assumptions, and beliefs about your child’s behavior: Every child is unique. As a parent, having realistic expectations is an important lesson to learn. Expecting perfection or constant excellence from your child can lead to disappointment and frustration.
  • Taking care of yourself as a parent so it’s easier to be patient, consistent, and available to your child: Learning to be a good parent also means learning to care for yourself. When your own needs are met and you feel fulfilled and cared for, it’s much easier to support your child’s needs.
