Since 2009, Diamonds & Denim has stood as a beacon of hope and support for One Place. As we mark the 16th anniversary of this event, we’re taking a moment to reflect on its origins, evolution, and greater impact on the children and families in Onslow County.

If you haven’t purchased  your sponsorship yet for this year’s Diamonds & Denim, it’s not too late! Learn more about available opportunities here.

The History of Diamonds & Denim

“We started Diamonds & Denim in 2009 as an opportunity to fund the Child Advocacy Center (CAC),” shares Jenn Johnson, Director of Donor Engagement. “At that time, the CAC had no identified funding sources, yet its services were highly critical to the future of Onslow County.”

Many of the very first attendees and planners of Diamonds & Denim are still a core part of One Place today. “Our shared vision for the event set the stage for what would become a staple of One Place,” says Sara Cariaso, Annual Fund Manager.

The original planning committee included both Johnson and Cariaso as well as Ann Marie Raymond, Chief Advancement Officer; Kathleen Holbrook, Advocacy and Community Relations Director; Terri Uzzell, Advancement Support Specialist; Dawn Rochelle, Chief Executive Officer; and Lisa Davis, Early Literacy Coordinator.

Over the past decade, Diamonds & Denim has grown tremendously—both in size and impact. The event has moved to various venues across Onslow County, from the Country Club to the Rustic Barn. The very first event in 2009 was held at the American Legion Building, and this year, Diamonds & Denim returns to this venue.

While Diamonds & Denim has been a staple in the Onslow County community, it hasn’t come without challenges. The event was canceled in 2019 due to Hurricane Florence, followed by another in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Despite these setbacks, the unwavering support of our sponsors was a true testament to their belief in our cause,” says Cariaso. “None of our gracious supporters wanted their money returned.”

Making Onslow County Stronger

Diamonds & Denim is more than just a fundraising event—it celebrates community spirit and generosity. Over the years, Diamond & Denim has helped steward donors and enabled One Place to break ground in 2023 on our new permanent home.

“One of my favorite parts of Diamonds & Denim is witnessing the trust and support of our community,” shares Johnson. “Many of our donors continue to give, year after year, because they believe in the positive impact of our programs on the lives of children and families. Some even donate without attending the event, which only highlights their deep-rooted belief in our mission.”

“As we look to the future, our vision for Diamonds & Denim is as vibrant as ever,” says Cariaso. “We’re eagerly anticipating hosting D&D in our new home, and we have our sights set on growing an endowment to secure the future of One Place.”

While personal highlights from past events are extensive, a recurring favorite is seeing the local community come together for the night of the event. Whether this is your first time joining us for Diamonds & Denim or you’ve attended for years, we extend a warm invitation to this integral event.
